Michigan land records, 1831-1864

Collection of letters, receipts and accounts concerning land deals in and around Detroit, St. Mary's Falls Ship Canal Co. and Toledo, Oh. It includes the records of Houghton & Hubbard (later, Houghton, Hubbard & Hubbard and Houghton, Hubbard & Welles) from 1836 through 1860, with accounts by Thomas H. and Henry G. Hubbard. Noted cartographer Bela Hubbard's signature also appears in this collection, as does that of Michigan geologist Douglass Houghton. Other records include those of Stephen W. Palmer of Norvel and Napolion, Michigan, with much correspondence with Jacob Ten Eyck of Cazenovia, Madison County, N.Y.

Born in Hamilton, New York on April 23, 1814, Bela Hubbard was the son of Thomas H. Hubbard. He came to Detroit in 1835. Bela Hubbard married Sarah E. Baughman of Adrian, Michigan on March 2, 1848. After his admission to the Michigan Bar in 1842, Hubbard practiced law for a time with Charles Collins, but he soon gave up the law to devote his time to real estate.
